Welcome To Making Movies That Matter
The 3rd Annual Mitchell Englander’s Making Movies that Matter (MMTM) Youth Short Film Festival is off and running for hundreds of young film makers from elementary, middle, high school campuses throughout Council District 12 (CD12) and the San Fernando Valley and I couldn’t be more thrilled.
What makes this project unique is that the cadre of 32 sponsored schools are receiving mentoring from award-winning artists-in-residence (AIR) as part of the CalArts Community Arts Program (CAP) as well as state-of-the-art smartphone technology bundles that the schools keep – all fully funded by my office. The themes of social action and civic engagement will be reinforced throughout this 6 month process and students are invited to express themselves in one of four genres: animation, public service announcement (PSA), live action and documentary.
My hope is that these young filmmakers will learn our hometown art of moviemaking and perhaps, at the same time, find a purpose and cause that inspires them to create quality films which impact others. Who knows, there may be a future Steven Spielberg, Kathryn Bigelow or Alfonso Cuarón out there just waiting for the opportunity to express themselves. With arts education funding at all-time lows, this may be the spark that ignites the flame of calling and purpose.”
